While lots of people appreciated, enjoyed, and appreciated him, others (especially Pres. Harry Truman) thought Douglas MacArthur was a disgrace. No matter personal viewpoint, however, any person would be hard-pressed to negate MacArthur’s devotion to country and the conservation of flexibility.

He married his very first better half, Louise, on Valentine’s Day in 1922, though this marital relationship eventually didn’t last. He later on married Jean (who called him “Sir Boss”) in 1937, and ended up being a dad for the first time at the age of 58. While he plainly valued his operate in the military, his love of being a dad won the affections of his heart. He said: “By profession I am a soldier and take pride because fact, however I am prouder, infinitely prouder to be a father. A soldier damages in order to build; the dad only constructs, never ever destroys. The one has the potentialities of death; the other embodies development and life. And while the crowds of death are mighty, the battalions of life are mightier still. It is my hope that myson when I am gone will remember me, not from battle, however in the house, duplicating with him our easy everyday prayer, ‘Our daddy, Who art in Heaven.'”.

Not long before he passed away, he went back to his precious West Point. In an address there, he thought back on his life and work by stating this: “The shadows are extending for me. The golden is here. My days of old have vanished, tone and tint. They have actually gone glimmering through the imagine things that were. Their memory is among marvelous appeal, watered by tears, and coaxed and touched by the smiles of yesterday. I listen vainly, however with thirsty ears, for the witching tune of faint bugles blowing reveille, of far drums beating the long roll. In my dreams I hear once again the crash of guns, the rattle of musketry, the unusual, mournful mutter of the battlefield. However at night of my memory, always I come back to West Point. Always there re-echoes and echoes: Duty, Honor, Country.

Today marks my final roll call with you, but I want you to know that when I cross the river my last conscious thoughts will be of The Corps, and The Corps, and The Corps. I bid you farewell.” He passed away on April 5, 1964, from biliary cirrhosis, and his other half stayed a widow for well over 30 years prior to her death at the age of 101.
